Tips to Choosing Interior Lighting

When choosing interior lighting keep in mind that you most likely will need to contact an electrician to install your lights.  Hiring someone who provides electrical services is the smart thing to do when it comes to dealing with electricity.

Style

When choosing lights for your home consider the style of your home.  Modern lights would not suit a period home nor would something old fashioned go well in a studio apartment.  If your home has a clear style then choosing your light fittings will be a little easier.  If your home doesn’t have a clear style you have a little more freedom of choice.  If you have a lot of furniture you should choose light fittings that aren’t too elaborate or busy, otherwise the room may look too cluttered.

Size

If you have higher ceilings then you will be able to have larger light fittings or those that hang lower.  An interesting effect is to have two or three of the same light fitting hanging in a row, which looks great over a meals area or kitchen bench.  If you have a large or grand entrance your light fitting can be the feature of this area.  The trick is to get the size of your light fitting right.  If you have large rooms and you pick light fittings that are too small then they will tend to get a little lost.

Energy efficient

To help save energy and reduce your power bills, install energy efficient light globes in your light fittings.

Multiple sources

Don’t just restrict yourself to having one main source of lighting in each room.  As well as the light fitting hanging from the ceiling, you could also have spot lights over areas you want to highlight, like a display cabinet, bookshelf or kitchen area, or you could even have spotlights set into the floor so that they shine upwards.  You may have several hanging light fittings lighting up an area or make use of lamps as well as overhead lights.

Lamps

There are some beautiful lamps available in modern and unusual designs as well as old fashioned period styles.  Your lamps can either stand on a side table or desk, beside the bed or any other surface, or you can buy tall free standing lamps.  Lamps can create a cosy atmosphere and are perfect if you only want to have dim lighting in a room, such as in a nursery or children’s bedroom.  As well as looking nice they can also create separate areas within a room just by the amount of light they cast.

Formal rooms

Your choice of lighting can help make your room look more formal.  Chandeliers are perfect to create a formal look and there are great modern designs that look fantastic in formal spaces.

Value

When choosing your lighting, think about how they will increase the value of your home.  If you think that a particular light might increase the value of your home because it dresses up your room a little more than another choice then this could be the one to go for, even if it costs a little more.
